Biography
Fe Del Mundo was born in Manila on November 27, 1911. She was the sixth of eight children. At age fifteen, Fe Del Mundo entered the University of the Philippines and received an Associate in Arts and later a medical degree with highest honors. In 1940, she received a M.A. in bacteriology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Possibly the first woman admitted as a student of the Harvard Medical School, she founded the first pediatric hospital
in the Philippines. Her pioneering work in pediatrics in the Philippines in an active medical practice that has spanned 8 decadeshas won her international recognition, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1977. In 1980, she was conferred the rank and title of National Scientist of the Philippines.
